Finding the best auto insurance plan can be stressful. You’re worried about the kind of coverage you need to get, the additional coverage you probably want to get, and how much all of that is going to cost.
Many drivers are unaware of the minimum coverage auto insurance policies need by law. Most are also unaware of the different kinds of coverage they can add to their policy to suit their needs. Because of this, drivers end up spending more than they need to.
Allstar Insurance has been selling car insurance policies in Georgia since 2011. Our customers can attest to our dependability and affordability. Choose Allstar Insurance if you are looking for affordable auto insurance policies and excellent customer service.
MINIMUM COVERAGE REQUIREMENTS
The minimum requirements for auto insurance vary from state to state. Therefore, you’ll want to double-check what your state requires before shopping for insurance quotes. The agents at Allstar Insurance are happy to tell you the minimum requirements in Georgia, but it doesn’t hurt to have an idea before speaking with an agent. Although states have different minimum requirements for auto insurance, there are common coverage requirements you’ll see across different states. These include:
Liability Insurance
For both bodily injury (BI) and property damage (PD). Liability insurance is necessary to cover the other driver’s/drivers’ medical and auto repair costs when you are at fault in an accident. Most insurers bundle the two types of liability coverage together. While other common requirements on this list vary, almost all states require liability coverage.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
This is common in no-fault states where liability does not have to be proven. PIP insurance covers your own medical costs. However, it does not cover auto repair costs.
Uninsured / Underinsured
This covers you if the other driver was at fault but doesn’t have the coverage to pay for damages to your vehicle or yourself. Note that this kind of coverage can also vary from state to state. In Florida, for example, PIP only covers medical costs but does not cover auto repair costs. However, in Texas, it covers both auto repair and medical costs. Check with your state to make sure.
MINIMUM COVERAGE LIMITS
Along with the minimum types of coverage you need, there are also minimum coverage limits. For example, your state may require your coverage to have a minimum of $25,000 in bodily injury per person, $50,000 in bodily injury per accident and $10,000 in property damage.
OTHER COMMON TYPES OF COVERAGE
Comprehensive Coverage
Comprehensive insurance covers any damage to your car that wasn’t caused by a collision. This can include:
Natural disasters (fires, flooding, etc.)
Vandalism/theft
Damage done by animals
Civil disturbances (like riots)
Fallen objects
Although comprehensive coverage is optional for vehicle owners, it is typically required for vehicles with a lien or leased vehicles. The same is true for collision coverage.
Collision Coverage
Collision coverage covers damage to your vehicle from an accident. Because liability insurance only covers damage to other vehicles and comprehensive coverage does not cover damage from accidents, this picks up where the other two leave off. Collision coverage is smart to have when uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage won’t cover any or all of the damage to your vehicle.
Both collision and comprehensive coverage come with deductibles, which is the amount you pay out of pocket before the policy kicks in. The most common deductibles are $500 and $1,000, with higher premiums for lower deductibles. To learn more about the different types of auto insurance call us today.
